Identify the carburetor - check part numbers on the metal identification disc which is riveted to the top of the air intake against the carburetor specification chart. The inside number (next to the rivet) is the Zenith assembly number and the numebr near the outer edge of the disc is the vehicle manufacturer’s part number.
DISASSEMBLY
REMOVAL OF AIR INTAKE
- Remove the hex screw (60), washer (59), fuel inlet union (58), screen (57), union body stud (56) and washer (55).
- Remove four hex head cap screws (1) with lockwashers (2) which attach air intake assembly (53) to bowl and throttle body assembly.
- Raise air intake assembly slightly and loosen gasket from fuel bowl, then lift air intake clear of bowl and throttle assembly. Use care not to damage float (49).
DISASSEMBLY OF AIR INTAKE
- Remove gasket (48) from flange of air intake body.
- Press screw driver against end of float axle (50) at slotted side of hinge bracket and force axle through hinge bracket. Remove float (49) and fuel valve needle (part of 51).
- Remove fuel valve seat (51) and fiber washer (52) from air intake body.
- Remove idle adjusting needle (17) and friction spring (16) from side of air intake body.
- Mark choke plate and flange of air intake body as a guide to correct assembly, then remove choke plate screw (3) with lockwashers (4) and choke plate (5).
- Remove cotter pin (9) from connecting rod (10) and remove connecting rod; then remove choke lever and shaft assembly (8) from air intake body.
- Remove friction lever stud (11), flat washers (12) spring (13), friction lever (14) and spring retainer screw (15).
NOTE: Early models of 22-series carburetors used a spring loaded type of choke. On these models it is necessary to remove the choke lever and driver housing and gasket before the choke shaft and driver can be removed.
- Remove choke shaft seal (6) and retainer (7) from choke shaft boss using small screwdriver to lift out retainer and seal. Drive out shaft plug located at opposite side of air intake body.
DISASSEMBLY OF BOWL AND THROTTLE BODY
- Remove secondary and primary venturi (47) and (46) from recess in bowl and throttle body assembly.
- Remove idle jet (18) from top surface of fuel bowl, using a screwdriver.
