The Carter WGD is a 2-barrel carburetor used on various engines over the years. Like any carburetor, it can experience a range of problems that affect engine performance. Here's a troubleshooting guide to help you identify and potentially rectify some common issues with the Carter WGD:
Has the car been sitting for months at a time? If so, then most likely the gas has turned and coated the inside of the carburetor, gas lines and gas tank with varnish. This can result in any one of the problems mentioned below.
1. Engine Won't Start or Hard Starting:
- Fuel Supply: Ensure that there's fuel in the tank, and the fuel is reaching the carburetor. Check the fuel pump and fuel filter for blockages or malfunction. Test the fuel pump for 3 to 4 lbs of pressure.
- Float Level: The float level might be set too high or too low. Adjust it according to the manufacturer's specs.
- Choke: Ensure the automatic choke is functioning properly. It should be closed when the engine is cold and open as the engine warms up.
- Electrical: Of course check the ignition, plugs, points, cap & wires to be sure they are functioning properly.
- Filter: A clogged fuel filter can cause weak gas flow.
2. Engine Stalls or Hesitates:
- Accelerator Pump: If there's a hesitation when accelerating, the accelerator pump might be faulty or improperly adjusted. Pay special attention to the small passage as they can get plugged easily.
- Venturi Size: A venturi that's too large for the engine can cause stalling.
- Idle Mixture: Adjust the idle mixture screw to achieve the best idle quality.
3. Poor Fuel Economy or Black Smoke from Exhaust:
- Rich Mixture: If the carburetor is delivering too much fuel, it will result in poor fuel economy and black smoke. Check the float level, jet sizes, and power valve.
- Air Filter: A clogged air filter can restrict airflow, leading to a richer mixture. Replace or clean the filter.
4. Engine Backfires or Pops:
- Ignition Timing: Incorrect timing can cause backfires. Check and adjust the ignition timing.
- Lean Mixture: A lean condition in the carburetor can also cause backfiring. Check for vacuum leaks and ensure the carburetor jets are clean and the correct size.
5. Rough Idle:
- Idle Mixture: Adjust the idle mixture screws for best idle.
