Accelerator Pump Function:

The Edelbrock carburetor accelerator pump plays a crucial role in delivering the right amount of fuel to the engine during rapid throttle openings, such as when accelerating. Here's how it works:

  1. Throttle Opening: When you press down on the accelerator pedal, the throttle valve in the carburetor opens, allowing more air to enter the engine. This sudden increase in airflow creates a momentary imbalance in the air-fuel mixture, which can cause hesitation or stumbling if not corrected quickly.
  2. Acceleration Enrichment: To compensate for this imbalance, the accelerator pump springs into action. It is typically located on the side of the carburetor and is connected to the throttle linkage. As the throttle is opened, it activates the accelerator pump mechanism.
  3. Fuel Delivery: The accelerator pump contains a diaphragm and a pump chamber filled with fuel. As the throttle is opened, the movement of the throttle linkage causes the diaphragm to compress, creating pressure in the pump chamber.
  4. Fuel Squirt: The increase in pressure forces fuel out of the pump chamber through a small passage called the discharge nozzle or squirt nozzle. This pressurized burst of fuel is squirted directly into the carburetor's venturi, which is the area where the air and fuel mix before entering the engine's cylinders.
  5. Fuel Enrichment: The additional fuel provided by the accelerator pump enriches the air-fuel mixture, compensating for the momentary lean condition that occurs during rapid throttle openings. This ensures smooth acceleration and prevents hesitation or stumbling.
  6. Return to Idle: Once the throttle is released and the engine returns to idle or cruising speed, the accelerator pump diaphragm returns to its original position, ready to respond to the next throttle input.
  7. Replacement and Maintenance: If your accelerator pump fails, you may experience stumbling or hesitation during acceleration. Edelbrock pump replacement parts are her

Overall, the Edelbrock carburetor accelerator pump is a vital component that helps maintain engine performance and drivability during acceleration by providing an extra shot of fuel when needed.

HOW TO TEST THE EDELBROCK ACCELERATOR PUMP

We are in the process of rebuilding an Edelbrock 4 barrel carburetor. Before closing up the carburetor I want to test the accelerator pump circuit.

The accelerator pump circuit is what give the engine an extra squirt of gas when stepping on the accelerator. An accelerator pump circuit that isn’t working well can cause hesitation, or bog.
